“Artwork” is a noun that refers to all of the things created by people to pursue beauty or to reveal the true essence of our lives. Often, this field is considered irrelevant in our daily lives. Many pragmatists question the necessity of artwork as compulsory education in high school, expressing concerns about efficiency.
The strongest supporters of reform stand behind the recent explosion of development in science and technology：an ever-widening scope of knowledge imparted in our universities, ranging from basic calculus equations to advanced mathematics. High foreign language standards are also now included in the high school curriculum. Consequently, to ensure their academic performance, high school students don’t have the time or energy to take art courses seriously.
However, in most art courses, the most time-consuming activities are learning craftsmanship and technique. The goal is to help students cultivate their passion for beauty and to raise their aesthetic standards. Although the positive and long-lasting ramifications of these courses may be obscure at first, they will be manifested in the future. For example, when students are tempted by drugs or other depravities, they will avoid them. They will be motivated to succeed and make a fortune.
Upon a careful evaluation of these reform proposals and their counter-arguments, I subscribe to the notion that art education is still an essential part of our high school educational system. The academic achievements of a student are indeed very important. But to ensure this, a love of life and beauty are equally indispensable.
